I often have asked my students to define drawing, knowing it's an impossible task. One of my favorite definitions is by a former student, Lynn Vance, who said: Drawing is the second wind of the mind. This is certainly a poetic and evocative approach to the task.
And it points to the real purpose of the exercise. A universal definition can't have much real meaning, so that formulating a definition is a means of focusing the self on drawing in a personal way that could include style, content, strategy and/or attitude.
